Visio Divina is a type of prayer that uses artwork of scriptural scenes for meditation. Enter into prayer with an Orthodox icon of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The icon is made by iconographer Demetrios Hraniotis (Greece).
While you are reflecting on the image, you may want to ask yourself the following questions as a guide:
- How would it have felt to be present the day of Jesus' crucifixion?
- What is the weather like?
- Is there a big crowd?
- What do you hear?
- Do you smell anything?
- What does Jesus look like as he hangs on the cross? Is he struggling? Are his eyes open? Is he
looking at anyone? Anything?
- Who is standing closest to Jesus?
- Who are they? What do they look like? How are they reacting?
- How do you feel? What is it like to know that Jesus is suffering out of love for you?
